Laser Hair Removal 101

When reading online about laser hair removal, I was shocked by the polarizing comments. People either seemed to love it or hate it, swear by it or said it was a waste of time. Just like anything else in the medical cosmetic realm, it’s important to do it with someone who is certified and knows what they’re doing. This will definitely affect results. I saw Tracy at Bare Med Spa and pelted her with questions haha! I tried my best to get the questions you submitted answered as well as some of my own.

Does It Hurt?

This was the most common question. Everyone’s pain response is different. Tracy said for some people it’s rough to get through and others do it with a breeze. I got LHR on my bikini area and for me, I’d rank it on a 5/10 on the pain scale. The pain lasts for a second with the zap of the laser. Its definitely uncomfortable, but I’m not even sure I’d call it “pain”. The closest thing I can compare it to is like when the curling iron gets too close to your ear. It feels really hot, and then it’s done. It also varies based on sensitivity of area. On the outside of my bikini area, it was totally fine. As we moved in was when the uncomfortable feeling happened. I think I winced twice in total haha. The nice thing was, the pain didn’t linger. When the session was over, it was over.

How Many Treatments Does It Take/ Length Of Efficacy?

Typically, 6-8 for total hair removal. Depending on type of hair, which I will discuss next, it could be more or less. It also depends on the area and how course the hair is there. With each treatment, you’ll see a reduction in how fast the hair grows as well as the thickness. As far as how long it lasts, reduction of hair growth is permanent. For complete lack of hair growth, maintenance will be needed, but again, will differ for everyone based on area and type of hair.

Does It Work On All Types Of Hair?

Yes and no. The laser is actually light that is attracted to pigment. The darker the hair, the better it works. Those with black/brown hair will see quicker, faster, more effective results than those with gray, light blonde or red hair.

What’s The Prep Work?

As with all therapies that involve lasers, sun should be avoided both directly before and after. Since its February and I did my bikini area, it was no big deal- but if you’re doing arms or legs in the summer, be sure to avoid sun exposure! It’s also best to not use any self tanning creams, get a wax or do any plucking prior to treatment. This ensures the laser can focus on the hair follicle and directly penetrate it. Getting LHR is the most effective in the winter, when skin is as it’s palest, making it easy for the laser to find the follicle.

Does Pregnancy Affect Efficacy?

Tracy said she’s only seen results altered by pregnancy for those who have gotten LHR on their face. Not to say it can’t happen, but from her experience, all other areas aren’t really effected!

I highly recommend Bare Med Spa for this procedure. They’re trustworthy, professional and experienced. To learn more about LHR, you can visit www.baremedspa.com or call 816-844-9334 (Downtown KC) or 913-491-4000 (Leawood). I went to the Downtown Location!
