Healthy Hair: Its Not All About the Products
Theres so much more than a great product routine in order to grow healthy hair. While using quality products is a must, what you do to your hair on the daily also makes a huge difference. Here’s some tips & tricks I do to keep damage at a minimum and make sure my hair stays happy.
Ditch the after-shower heavy towel wrap.
I learned this one from my hairstylist! Not only does the weight of the towel pull and tug at the finer hairs around your face, your hair can actually become entangled in the small loops of the towel fabric and rip off. I use a lightweight, mirco fiber towel wrap thats meant for this and I really do think it absorbs well without ripping hair out.
Wet hair is vulnerable hair
Hair directly after the shower is tangled and easy to damage. The key is to do as little with it as possible. I don’t have super curly/tangly hair so I opt to not brush it at all, but I know this is not do-able for everyone. If you must brush after the shower, I recommend using a great detangler and the right brush. I use the Sexy Hair Tr-Wheat leave-in conditioner after I’ve gotten most of the moisture out with the wrap and it works wonders. My friends who use it love it too! I also use the Wet Brush at all times, even when my hair is dry.
Your hair tells you what color it should be
Let me preface this one by saying do your thing-if you want pink hair, have pink hair. This one’s from my personal experience. Strands of hair actually look different when they’re different colors. My hair naturally is a dark blonde with reddish undertones. In high school and college I went for a cool blonde and my hair paid for it. It ended up being dry and brittle. Within 6 months of going back to the realm of my natural color, my hair thickened and got crazy long. I attribute the growth to less dying and less breakage. Theres only so much you can do to affect the actual growth and I truly believe less dye jobs/dye close to your natural color will help with this.
The less product, the better
I have to reel myself back sometimes from overusing. I see “hydrating” on a hair mask, “volumizing” on a mousse or “extra shine” on a spray and think if I slap it all on there I’ll have luscious, bouncy perfect hair all the time. But just like anything else, your hair needs to breathe. It’s totally not wrong to use these enhancing products for occasions but as a rule, I try to stay minimal. Build up of product can cause hair strands to get gunky and break off. And vigorous scrubbing with shampoo isn’t a good problem solver either!
Be gentle when you wash
I used to wash and condition my hair haphazardly, which ended up in huge rats. Instead of matting hair hair down to my head and scrubbing, I treat it more as a way to pre-maturely detangle. I shampoo scrubbing only with my finger tips, then work the conditioner through in a combing motion with my fingers. I leave the shower with almost untangled hair and rarely do I see huge chunks wash down the drain anymore.
Silk>Cotton
Theres not much explaining to this one. Silk pillowcases are easier on your hair than cotton!
